The history of the hourglass goes all the way back to the ancient Greeks and Romans — and it’s possible that this device was used before that time as well. As early as the third century BC, the Greeks and Romans were using this gadget. In fact, historians suggest hourglasses were used in the senate in ancient Rome to time political speeches. The oldest writings that reference the hourglass are from 1345 by a clerk ordering supplies for a ship’s voyage. While hourglasses were used much differently then than they are now, their design remains almost exactly the same.
